FAQ

1. How does massage work/Why is it important?

Massage is the manual release of tight muscles and fascia (connective tissue) which can contribute to chronic musculoskeletal issues, pain, tightness, joint pain etc. Muscle imbalances or tightness can lead to referred or localised pain. Adequate muscle care is important to ensure other issues do not arise, if muscles become too tight, they can have a negative impact on joints. Muscles can also hold emotional and psychological tension such as stress and anxiety, which contributes to the tightness, and possibly pain, felt.

2. What are some of the conditions massage can help with?

Frozen shoulder
Tennis/Golfer’s elbow
Headaches/migraines
TMJ (jaw related issues: cracking, clicking, lockjaw)
Arthritis/Rheumatoid arthritis and other chronic joint degenerative conditions
Tendinopathy
Joint reconstructions
Chronic pain and conditions such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue
Muscle imbalances
Functional scoliosis and other spinal conditions

3. How many treatments do I need/How often do I need to come?

Depending on the issues you have this can vary. This is also dependent on what you do in your daily routine, i.e. engage in physical exercise, have a physically demanding job, spend long periods of your day either sitting or standing etc.

In the acute stages of injuries or cases of chronic tightness/problems, more regular treatments are recommended, weekly or fortnightly, until your symptoms improve. As things improve, the frequency and need for massage reduces.

When you are no longer experiencing any of the issues you once were, a monthly maintenance treatment is recommended to ensure it stays that way. Exercise/stretching recommendations will be given to speed your recovery along and maintain your health.

4. What are the benefits to dry needling?

Dry needling is a technique which speeds recovery, improves muscle activation, reduces tension or tightness, reduces chronic and acute pain, improves range of motion and muscle patterns, and promotes healing.

5. What are the benefits of cupping?

Cupping increases the blood circulation in your body which aids in keep muscles healthy. Tightness can restrict this blood flow, which then keeps the muscles tight leading to more complications. By increasing the circulation and providing the muscles with fresh blood, they essentially loosen. Cupping also loosens fascial (connective tissue) tightness.

6. How will I feel after a treatment?

Following the first treatment, you may feel quite tender/sore for 1-2 days, this is completely normal and subsides by itself. You will be less tender after each treatment as your muscles improve. Again, home care recommendations provided by the therapist will aid in getting you feeling better quicker, and help you maintain this in the long run.

HICAPS is available for all treatments.
